Magnet is what it is because of the people involved, and a huge amount of what is contributed is the work of volunteers – editors, trustees, distributors. Editors are given responsibility for the process and content of producing the magazine. They bring a range of skills and experience and contacts, giving the magazine a freshness and breadth of thinking.

For some it is an opportunity to use a professional skill or hobby in a volunteer role; for others it is a chance to learn new skills that can lead to employment.

For us, it provides breadth and variety – a range of ideas and a long list of contacts in various parts of the UK and worldwide. For the volunteer, it is an opportunity to do something challenging and stimulating with support from a committed and supportive team.

The new trustees also bring a wide range of skills and experience to their task of financial and strategic oversight as we move forward.

Opportunities to be involved come up from time to time – see the 'your magnet' section for more details.

Biblical lessons from a lifelong bird-watcher
    John Stott

    Candle Books (1999) £8.99 ISBN 1859852726

John Stott combines his passion for birds and his talent for biblical teaching to produce a book that would make a delightful gift. Liberally illustrated with his own colour photos of birds from every continent, these ‘essays in orni-theology' address several themes including faith, repentance, self esteem, joy, freedom and love. The basis for this is found in the command of Jesus to, ‘Behold the birds of the air!' translated by Stott as ‘watch birds!' I particularly like the chapter on joy, which likens birdsong to the desire of Christians to sing praise to God. The concluding chapter carries an important caveat - that we need to be aware of Jeremiah's warning of a possible return to pre-creation chaos, darkness and devastation and resolve to "protect and preserve our unique, God-given environment, and enjoy its ‘bio-diversity', not least its fascinating birds."
