Science and Religion in the Fullness of Life
Stephen Jay Gould
Vintage (2002) £7.99 ISBN 0099284529

Gould has written brilliant essays on many aspects of science, especially his own fields of geology, zoology and evolution. In this book he sheds light on a dilemma that has plagued people since the Reformation - can science and religion be reconciled to one another? Instead of having to choose between them, he convincingly proposes the ‘golden resolution' that accords dignity and distinction to both. In doing this he delves into the history of science, with stories of figures such as Galileo and Darwin, and concludes that science defines the natural world and religion our moral world. Even in this contentious field he manages to retain a humorous edge that keeps the book both engaging and entertaining. It's a ‘good read'!

  • The Birds our Teachers

    the birds our teachers

Biblical lessons from a lifelong bird-watcher
    John Stott

    Candle Books (1999) £8.99 ISBN 1859852726

John Stott combines his passion for birds and his talent for biblical teaching to produce a book that would make a delightful gift. Liberally illustrated with his own colour photos of birds from every continent, these ‘essays in orni-theology' address several themes including faith, repentance, self esteem, joy, freedom and love. The basis for this is found in the command of Jesus to, ‘Behold the birds of the air!' translated by Stott as ‘watch birds!' I particularly like the chapter on joy, which likens birdsong to the desire of Christians to sing praise to God. The concluding chapter carries an important caveat - that we need to be aware of Jeremiah's warning of a possible return to pre-creation chaos, darkness and devastation and resolve to "protect and preserve our unique, God-given environment, and enjoy its ‘bio-diversity', not least its fascinating birds."
