Issue one, published in 1987

Magnet began in 1987 as the magazine of the Women's Network of the Methodist Church, with the aim of encouraging, enabling and equipping women to take their full place in the life of the church. It separated from Women's Network in 2007 in order to reach a wider audience of women and men from all denominations.

Magnet Resources was established in 2009 as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status in order to build on the work and reputation of Magnet magazine and:

  • to encourage, resource and affirm individuals in their journey of Christian faith
  • to inspire individuals and groups to bring their faith into action on issues of social responsibility
  • to provide opportunities for skills development and confidence-building through volunteering.

    the birds our teachers

Biblical lessons from a lifelong bird-watcher
    John Stott

    Candle Books (1999) £8.99 ISBN 1859852726

John Stott combines his passion for birds and his talent for biblical teaching to produce a book that would make a delightful gift. Liberally illustrated with his own colour photos of birds from every continent, these ‘essays in orni-theology' address several themes including faith, repentance, self esteem, joy, freedom and love. The basis for this is found in the command of Jesus to, ‘Behold the birds of the air!' translated by Stott as ‘watch birds!' I particularly like the chapter on joy, which likens birdsong to the desire of Christians to sing praise to God. The concluding chapter carries an important caveat - that we need to be aware of Jeremiah's warning of a possible return to pre-creation chaos, darkness and devastation and resolve to "protect and preserve our unique, God-given environment, and enjoy its ‘bio-diversity', not least its fascinating birds."
